How to Hire a Pay Duty Officer in Durham Region

Did you know that off-duty police officers are available for hire to provide police presence for a range of functions? Also known as “Pay Duty Officers”, they can assist in your event, film shoot or more, including notifying the Police Communications Centre for the timing of any special effect activities that may cause public alarm.

What you need to know

Advanced booking is required. At least one-week notice is requested. Short notice requests will be scheduled based on officer availability. Durham Police will make their best efforts to fill all pay duty requests, but there is no guarantee.

Cancellation of pay duty assignments must be received at least 24 hours in advance. Email notification is required. Cancellations received after that time, will be subject to a three-hour minimum per officer and the administrative fee.

Events must be held within the Durham Region.

Alcohol-related events require a minimum of two officers.

The number of officers required for an event will be assessed according to the nature of the pay duty.

Officers assigned will be in full uniform only (no plain clothes).

  • Funerals
  • Grand openings
  • Municipal activities and requirements
  • Private functions
  • School events
  • Sports events
  • Traffic control
  • Road construction
  • Parades
  • Festivals
  • Dances
  • Traffic escort – wide/oversize loads (may need to provide permit)
  • Film productions, including traffic control and access/perimeter security related to public safety.

Prohibited Functions

Private policing to a premise with a permanent liquor licence approved by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario to offer the sale and service of liquor, where the primary purpose of the premise is the sale of alcohol.

Tactical Support Officers and/or regular pay duty officers to supervise special effects functions, explosives, pyrotechnics, tactical and firearms.

How much does it cost to hire a Pay Duty Police Officer?

$100 minimum (for three-hour duty) with $38.00 an hour thereafter for police cruiser, subject to availability.

Please note:

  • a three hour minimum charge applies for all officers and vehicles required for a pay duty
  • 20% Administration Fee will be charged, in addition to HST

  • Payment is due in full to the Durham Regional Police Service in advance of the requested duty
  • Visa, MasterCard will be entered onto the “Pay Duty Request & Terms of Agreement” form
